CPH Script Club: Clybourne Park

RSVP Required. See Below for Date, Locations, and RSVP instructions!

The FREE CPH Script Club is everything you love about a book club - but with a play in the spotlight! First, check out a copy of the script from one of our partner libraries listed below, and you'll have one week to read it at home (this limit ensures that as many patrons can participate as possible). Then join CPH artistic staff members at the library for a free-flowing conversation exploring the play and how CPH artists take it from page to stage.

We'll be reading Clybourne Park, a critically acclaimed comedy which asks the question: Neighborhoods change, but do people? This "ferociously smart" and "pulverizingly funny" (New York Times) play about race, real estate, and the volatile values of each won nearly every honor the theatre has to give, including the Tony and Olivier Awards (the "British Tony") for Best Play, and the Pulitzer Prize.

The play explodes in two outrageous acts set 50 years apart. Act One takes place in 1959, as nervous community leaders anxiously try to stop the sale of a home to a black family. Act Two is set in the same house in the present day, as the now predominantly African-American neighborhood battles to hold its ground in the face of gentrification. Written by Bruce Norris as a response to Lorraine Hansberry's classic A Raisin in the Sun, this play provides plenty to discuss!

NOTE: This script contains mature language.
