Grossingers. Kutchers. The Concord.

Before Vegas and before the rebirth of Atlantic City, these once grand hotels in the Borsch Belt of the Catskill Mountains were "the place" for big-name entertainment. At the nightclubs housed within these resorts, the late shows featuring top comedians, popular crooners and famous hoofers were standing room only.

But by the late 1970s and 1980s, these places could no longer attract young guests or afford contemporary artists, relying instead on the nostalgic attraction of old-time entertainers. While earnest in their efforts and eager to please, these performers no longer had the skills or stamina to do what they were famous for, relying instead on their celebrity, showmanship and storytelling to tap the shared memories of the late-in-life audience in attendance.

Such is "Maurice Hines is Tappin' Thru Life," currently on tour and on stage at the Cleveland Play House.
