CLEVE REVIEW: Beck Center for the Arts Adds an Intriguingly Intellectual 'Seminar' to its Summer Session




Nominated as Best Play by the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama League, Theresa Rebeck's play follows good writing guidelines by offering intriguing characters in compelling situations. Luckily for audiences, she also knows when to aim for laughs, and when to get serious so playgoers will care about what is happening to the people onstage.  








Likewise, Donald Carrier offers a master class in direction with his work on this production. He balances the chaotic confrontations and intimate encounters expertly, and has staged the play so that viewers feel like they are fellow classmates with the would-be writers. 







Seminar's quintet of actors really bring out the best and the worst of their literary counterparts. Scott Plate as Leonard manages to be  utterly obnoxious during class, and surprisingly sympathetic in private. Andrew Gombas redeems his slacker character with hearty humor and heartfelt concern. Aily Roper is fashionably fetching as the opportunistic Izzy, and Brian Gale is neatly neurotic as the conflicted Douglas. Lara Knox gets to make the most telling transformation by learning another lesson -- if you can't beat 'em, join 'em...
