THE PLAYERS GUILD ANNOUNCES OPENING PRODUCTION OF 83rd SEASON;
 SWEENEY TODD

Widely acknowledged as Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece, SWEENEY TODD
is set amongst London’s seedy side streets and laced with Sondheim’s
characteristically brilliant wit and dark humor. This landmark musical
depicts the barber Sweeney Todd’s savage quest for justice and retribution
after years of false imprisonment. Aided by harridan pie shop owner Mrs.
Lovett, who is secretly in love with him, he sets out to avenge the wrongs
done to him and his family. Combining comic turns and chilling drama, music
hall-style numbers and hauntingly beautiful romantic songs, SWEENEY TODD
offers a fascinating portrait of a man driven to madness by injustice.

In what appears to be a first for the Theatre, the Guild is opening their
season in the William G. Fry Theatre.  The Fry Theatre is an intimate
thrust-style venue with seating that surrounds the stage on 3 sides.  By
staging the production in this space, the audience is sure to be immersed
in the dark and brooding world of Mr. Todd.  With only 139 seats available
for each performance, tickets are expected to sell fast and audiences are
encouraged to order seats early.

Under the direction of frequent Guild collaborator, Jon Tisevich, SWEENEY
TODD boasts a talented ensemble of actors which includes:

The production is scheduled to open on Friday, September 5, 2014 and will
run for three weekends through Sunday, September 21, with Friday and
Saturday evening performances at 8:00pm and Sunday matinees at 2:00pm.
 Tickets for this Downstage Musical are $18.00. Tickets for all
performances may be purchased online 24 hours a day at

located in the Great Court of the Cultural Center for the Arts, 1001 Market
