216-642-9012Sokol Greater Cleveland offers an iconic
play the weekend of September 27 and 28 to coincide with their monthly ethnic Sunday
dinner. The play, titled “The Good Captain Svejk,” is an
adaptation of The Fateful Adventures of the Good Soldier Švejk During the
World War,” written by the famous Czech author and anarchist, Jaroslav
Hasek. This novel is the most recognized and translated Czech
fiction, and considered the greatest literary work to come out of the First
World War. The adapted comedy is written
and directed by a local Czech, Joseph Bachna, and performed, in English, by the
Sokol Czech Cultural Center’s Vcelka Players. Curtain time for the Saturday evening performance is 7 pm. The Sunday matinee performance is at 3 pm,
following a traditional Czech dinner of pork, dumplings and sauerkraut. Both the dinner and the play are held in the
historic Bohemian National Hall, 4939 Broadway Avenue in Cleveland. Attend both or either one.
“The
Good Soldier Svejk,” the abbreviated title of the original work, is said to be
one of the greatest satirical novels of the 20thcentury. The novel chronicles the irreverent misadventures of Josef Svejk, the ‘everyman’ who survives the hypocrisies of his day by being the wisest fool. While
Hasek’s novel is set in Austria-Hungary at the time of WW I, Bachna’s play
takes place after the war when the bumbling Good Soldier, only to be rid of
him, is promoted to Captain and sent to America as a military adviser. Bachna’s storyline includes the absurdly comic
situations of the Good Soldier while weaving a bit of history into the plot. It’s unlikely you’d find a Czech who
doesn’t know the comic round-faced,
beer-loving Svejk character. He has become a folklore icon inspiring movies, an opera, Svejk-styled items and even pubs around the world. If you haven’t been introduced to Svejk, now
is your opportunity. Door admission for
the play is $10 but advance reservations are $8 and can be made by phoning 216-642-9012. Bachna is so sure you will enjoy his
adaptation, a money-back guarantee is offered if you leave before the end of
intermission.
