Lakeland hosts free performance of “Asking For It” Oct. 18,
Powerful and dramatic work provides the
opportunity for community dialogue and education about sexual assault
KIRTLAND, Ohio – Oct. 8, 2014 – Lakeland Community College is hosting a
free, theater performance of “Asking For It” Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7:30
p.m. in the Dr. Wayne L. Rodehorst Performing Arts Center, 7700 Clocktower
Dr., Kirtland, 44094.
This performance is a partnership of the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and
Mental Health Services Board of Lake County, the Cleveland Rape Crisis
Center and Lakeland’s Creative and Liberal Arts Division.
Written and performed by JoAnna Rush, “Asking For It” is a solo play about
Bernadette – a feisty dancer and former Outstanding Catholic Youth of the
Year who takes on New York. Young Bernie, a future Sister of Charity with
a fierce libido, puts her religious vocation on hold and skips out on the
nuns. Just before an audition for the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes, she
is tricked into a car and raped. Her full circle transformation is a mix
of seriousness and humor that leave audiences laughing at what she really
asks for and what she gets.
The performer, JoAnna Rush, and Alex Leslie, director of prevention and
outreach programs at the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center will lead a
post-show discussion.
“Asking For It” is directed by Tony Award nominee Lynne Taylor-Corbett and
produced by Jeffrey Grover in association with Yonanda Productions.
