CLEVELAND, OH. Cesear’s Forum’s regional premiere production of Edward Albee’s OCCUPANT
concludes this weekend with the final performance on October 25th. The play, a tribute to Louise
Nevelson, the renowned American sculptor, who returns from the dead for a final Q&A interview,
features Julia Kolibab and George Roth. In his New York Times Review of the Signature Theatre
production, Ben Brantley wrote; “…OCCUPANT bows its head in awe and gratitude before the
mysterious force of will that allows great artists to be. This necessarily lonely process of self-fulfillment
is what gives OCCUPANT an emotional heft beyond that of a mere biographical sketch.” Rave & Pan’s
Christine Howey writes, “the best thing about this production is the acting. Under the precise direction
of Greg Cesear, the two actors spin a sublimely hypnotic world.”
Producing intermittently, the limited engagement production opened September 19th at Kennedy’s
Down Under, PlayhouseSquare, 1501 Euclid Avenue (below the Ohio Theatre). Roy Berko noted,
“Edward Albee’s OCCUPANT is one of those special plays…a well written, thinking person’s play, which
gets a fine staging and interpretation.” The OCCUPANT set is designed by Laura Carlson Tarantowski
with lighting by Andrew Kaletta, costumes by Aimee Kluiber.
Andrea Simakis, in her Plain Dealer review, puts it this way; “This is a play about ideas, something
director Greg Cesear and his actors know. Its drama lies not in any overt action (there is none) but in the
push-pull between two people – or one person and one spirit, in this case – who want opposite things.
Kolibab, who bears a close enough resemblance to Nevelson to make it fun, and Roth suck the marrow
from the lean bones of the script and seem to be enjoying the hell out of it – and each other – as they're
doing it.”
