'The Norwegians' makes so much out of so little

At first glance, there is little to love about C. Denby Swanson's comedy "The Norwegians," currently on stage at Dobama Theatre.

Its story, such as it is, began life as a 10-minute play and has changed little for this 90-minute version. Two scorned women meet in a bar and conspire to hire two hit men to dispatch the guys who dumped them.

Any dispatching that needs to be done takes place off stage, so not much happens in this play besides banter in the bar and more of the same in the hit men's lair.

All this occurs on a near-barren stage, where the placement and removal of wooden chairs is the equivalent of a change in location and the dimming and brightening of lights represents a passage of time.

But rising out of this numbing simplicity like a Phoenix - a very, very funny Phoenix - is an absolutely brilliant piece of storytelling.
