Lake Erie College Theatre Department presents the Andy Kaufman play GodKnown for his outrageous stunts and elaborate pranks, the late comedy legend Andy Kaufman also wrote plays. The theatre department at Lake Erie College will present a play by Kaufman titled God. Told from the perspective of a child and filtered through the experiences of 1950s television, the play depicts a variety of storylines and characters, chief among them an old man who seems to think he's God (or is it God thinking he's an old man?). The show is directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Dr. Jerry Jaffe. The performances will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 6, 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the C.K. Rickel Theatre on campus in Royce Hall for the Fine and Performing Arts. The first few minutes of God are set on a busy street and introduce many of the recurring characters. From there, the ensemble depicts flying girls, a boy digging to China, an old-timey Western saloon, the world's biggest amusement park, gangsters and many other icons of 50s television. "None of my students knew who Andy Kaufman was," said Dr. Jaffe. "They certainly didn't know Ed Sullivan or Howdy Doody. These lessons themselves were part of my reason for doing this show."Kaufman wrote the play God while he was studying theatre at Grahm Junior College in Boston, Mass. and he often performed it as a one-man show, doing all of the characters and narration himself. Dr. Jaffe said that, according to his research, this is only the second time the play has been officially performed since Kaufman's death. Cast member Jessi Moore described the play as "an adventure to read, with new discoveries every night in rehearsal."The ensemble includes LEC students Alexis Grice, Devon Hood, Alexander Camczyc, Connor McCarthy, Jessi Moore, Mike Reasor and Grant Strlich-Waybright, as well as community member Brandon Stroud. The stage manager is sophomore Sarach Escadon and the assistant stage manager is senior Rebecca Sibinga. LEC alum Julie Harter designed the sets and costumes and is supervising the painting. LEC instructor Michael Breeze is responsible for lighting design. There is occasional adult language, but this production is appropriate for most audiences. Tickets for the event are $5 for community members and free for all Lake Erie College students and staff. No reservations are necessary. "She went down to the pet shop and came back with two alligators. We asked her why she'd got two alligators, and she said they were on sale. Buy one at the regular price and you got another one for a penny. An alligator one cent sale. In its own way it made sense." Richard Brautigan, A CONFEDERATE GENERAL FROM BIG SUR
