'Newsies' defined by dazzling dance, sanitized storytelling

The Disney-produced Broadway musical is a performing arts paradox.  

 

Shows like "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin" and "Beauty and the Beast" have collectively raised casual theater audiences' entertainment expectations while lowering their standards.  Disney productions are eye-catching, toe-tapping and crowd-pleasing, but they are hardly thought-provoking.

 

Therein lays much of the mass appeal of "Newsies," which recently ended its two-year Broadway run and launched a national tour that landed at PlayhouseSquare for a two-week engagement.
