         LAND OF CLEVE REVIEW:
             Flashback to the Seventies
in Karamu's Hilariously Heartwarming
'One Monkey Don't Stop No Show'

Director Michael Oatman skillfully stages Don Evans' play and makes the most of the '70s period in which the play is set, aided by Richard H. Morris, Jr. (Technical Director/Scenic/Lighting Designer), Harold Crawford (Costumer) and Ashley Aquilla (Assistant Director/Stage Manager).

Oatman encourages his talented cast to play up their counterparts' quirky characteristics, while keeping everything rooted in reality -- for the most part. So many shenanigans take place under the Harrison roof that the director allows some of the action to spill over into the seating area, which only adds to the fun. In fact, the interactive segments work so well that audience members end up cheering and laughing and commenting from their seats.

Not only do the actors handle their retro roles with passion and energy, but they also deliver personal monologues that are both highly revealing and really hilarious. Andrenee Priest and Darryl Tatum are excellent as the excited Reverend and his exasperated wife, while Taylor Tucker and Anthony Lanier are perfectly paired as the feisty young niece and her equally-stubborn guardian. As Felix and his girlfriend "Lil Bits," Jarrell Brown and Laprise Johnson garner lots of laughs, as do Joyce Linzy and Christol Christian as the meddling mother and the helpful hairdresser.
