Kent State University at Stark Theatre announces open auditions for Spring Awakening

Kent State University at Stark Theatre has announced open auditions for the season's musical production, Spring Awakening, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik. Auditions are open to everyone, including students and community persons.

This Tony Award-winning rock musical tells the story of desire and confusion as teenagers' hormones collide during the journey from youth to adulthood. Through rebellious trials and tribulations, the sensuality of the characters is often denied and suppressed, leading to tragic consequences. The poignant and revealing messages in Spring Awakening are powerful, passionate and unforgettable. For mature audiences only, due to violent content and strong (profane) language.

Auditions will be held on November 23 and 24 at 6 p.m. in the theatre of the Fine Arts Building, 6000 Frank Avenue NW in Jackson Township. Callbacks, if necessary, will be held on November 25.

Roles are available for seven men and six women. Auditionees should prepare a full-length piece from Spring Awakening or from another musical in a similar style (bring sheet music in the correct key). Choose a song sung by the character you are particularly interested in playing. OPTION - Sing one or two of the 16-32 bar character excerpts provided in the audition packet, based on the role of interest. Auditionees will also be asked to vocalize for range. An accompanist will be provided. Auditionees may also be asked to read selected sides from the show. For role information, visit www.stark.kent.edu/theatre<http://www.stark.kent.edu/theatre> and click on Audition Information for All Shows in the right-hand column.

The production will be performed on February 20 - 22 and February 27 - March 1 in the Kent State Stark Theatre. Rehearsals begin December 14 - 18; go on break from December 19 - January 3; then resume on January 4 and will occur five evenings a week until opening.

Scripts (and audition sides or scene excerpts used for the auditions) are available for perusal for periods up to 24 hours from the secretary (330-244-5151) of the Fine Arts Building, Monday through Friday, during business hours (8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.). Audition appointments are recommended, but not required. Scripts and audition sides will also be available in the reserve area of the Stark Campus Library.

Technical production opportunities are also available, such as stage and assistant stage managers, assistants to lighting, scenic, sound and costume designers. For more information about these openings, contact Theatre Specialist Louis Williams at 330-244-3375.
