Here's an excerpt from an article by by Roger Durbin of the Knight Foundation about The Boiling Point:

Akron area actors, would-be actors, and play lovers have a good thing going. Wandering Aesthetics, a small but highly active theater company, has a play-reading series called Akron’s Boiling Point. Anyone interested – in either participating by reading a role or two, or simply listening to some exciting and contemporary plays – can come and join in the fun.

During a recent sit-down interview with Kyle Jozsa (who, along with Benjamin Rexroad and Nici Romo, leads the group), Jozsa said that the group’s has averaged between 12-25 audience members and participants over the course of the eight plays that they have read since May. Ages range from teenagers and up.

The group meets once a month, always on a Tuesday at 8 p.m., Jozsa said, at the Balch Street Theatre. CATAC (or the Center for Applied Theatre and Active Culture) is willing to share its space with Wandering Aesthetics.

The structure for events is pretty loose, and often made up on the spot by Romo. Generally, Jozsa noted, role names are put into a hat and participants draw out a name. If it is a male name and the drawer is female, she can request to try again, but that sort of gender assignment isn’t necessary to read out the piece as written.

About the Show:

Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge is a musical parody of the Charles Dickens story A Christmas Carol. The premise of the show is, "What if Dickens' Mrs. Cratchit wasn't so goody-goody, but instead was an angry, stressed-out modern-day American woman who wanted out of this harsh London 1840s life?" The main character in Binge is the hard-drinking, suicidal Gladys Cratchit, whose harshness to her family surpasses Mommie Dearest by a mile.

About the Playwright:

Christopher Durang is an American playwright known for works of outrageous and often absurd comedy. A self-professed playwright since second grade, Durang received a B.A. in English from Harvard and an M.F.A. in playwriting from Yale School of Drama. Durang typically uses parody to comment upon sensitize social issues such as: child abuse, Roman Catholic dogma and culture and homosexuality. In 2013, his play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike won the Tony Award for Best Play. He lives in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with his partner, John Augustine; they have been together for more than 20 years.

About The Boiling Point:

The Boiling Point is that wild moment where internal pressures surpass outer, triggering a transformation. “Alternative” plays serve as our fuel to ignite the minds of Akronites. By reading a diverse array of texts, we set ablaze different genres, aesthetics and cultures– especially those works beyond the scope of traditional American theatre. The friction between these new encounters and their resulting conversations will generate the spark of fresh ideas that will take Akron to The Boiling Point.

About Wandering Aesthetics:

We wander in search of America. Through live theatrical performances devised from lived experiences, vigorous research into the American identity and deconstructing great works of Western canon, we forge a new mythology for generations of native Americans severed from their traditional roots. By exploring an array of artistic aesthetics and unique facets of the American identity, we weave a unified montage of what it means to "be an American in the present moment." We grow community, cultivating personal contact as a way to connect diverse tribes living under one Nation.
