About the Show:

In the Red and Brown Water is the first play in the Brother/Sister trilogy.

How far will Oya go to make a mark in the world? Fast, beautiful Oya is a young runner with enormous promise, forced to choose between her ailing mother and her own dreams. This intoxicating story charts a young girl’s thrust into womanhood and her subsequent fall into the murky waters of life.

The Brother/Sister Plays are dangerous, modern-day stories of kinship, love, heartache and coming-of-age. Tarell Alvin McCraney, one of the most celebrated young writers in the American theater, speaks with authenticity about a world that is gritty and lyrical, urban and mythic.

Susan Speers, PhD is directing the second show in the trilogy, The Brothers Size, at the University of Akron in the Spring.

About the Playwright:

Tarell Alvin McCraney is a gay, 34-year old, African-American playwright whose exquisite and groundbreaking work has put his career on an extraordinary trajectory. A Princeton University Hodder Fellow, McCraney has been honored with the Paula Vogel Playwriting Award, the Whiting Writing Award, and has been an International Writer in Residence for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

One of the most startling new American theatrical voices of the 21st century, McCraney is thrilling international audiences by pushing the boundaries of language, form, and sexuality in provocative and poetic ways.

About The Boiling Point:

The Boiling Point is that wild moment where internal pressures surpass outer, triggering a transformation. “Alternative” plays serve as our fuel to ignite the minds of Akronites. By reading a diverse array of texts, we set ablaze different genres, aesthetics and cultures– especially those works beyond the scope of traditional American theatre. The friction between these new encounters and their resulting conversations will generate the spark of fresh ideas that will take Akron to The Boiling Point.
