The Cleveland Chinese Music Ensemble, Northeast Ohio's traditional Chinese orchestra, returns to the Hudson Library for a varied program of festive music in celebration of the Chinese New Year (the Year of the Sheep).
The program, entitled "Ten Cups of Wine," is offered as a toast to the Library, in congratulation of its tenth anniversary in its new building. It will feature several new instrumental and vocal pieces including a Manchu lullaby and an erhu solo imitating the sounds of birds. The ensemble will be joined by special guest vocalist Sandra Emmeline (of the Akron-based band Sancat) for several numbers.
The ensemble will perform on an assortment of traditional Chinese musical instruments including dizi and xiao (bamboo flutes), sheng (mouth organ), suona (oboe), erhu (fiddle), gaohu (Cantonese fiddle), yehu (coconut fiddle), sihu (4-stringed fiddle), dahu (bass fiddle), pipa (pear-shaped lute), yueqin (moon lute), gongs, drums, and other percussion.
