AUDITION INFORMATION
Julius Caesar: Set in Africa
by William Shakespeare adapted by Rome Neal

Directed by Fred Sternfeld

“NO FEAR” SHAKESPEARE: If you are unfamiliar with Shakespeare’s use of language, we will have workshops when rehearsals start to teach you some important approaches. Also, you can view a complete version of Shakespeare’s text along with a side-by-side modern language adaptation here.

AUDITION DATES,  LOCATION & APPOINTMENTS: 
OPEN CALL: Monday or Wednesday, February 16 or 18,  6:00 - 9:00pm. Please plan on being at Karamu for 15-30 minutes during one of those days. CALLBACKS: Monday and/or Tuesday, February 23 and/or 24, 6:00 - 9:00pm.

AUDITION APPOINTMENTS:

AUDITION PREPARATION: Please prepare a 1-2 minute memorized Shakespeare monologue OR you can read a monologue from the script that will be provided to you when you arrive for your appointment.  You can also select a monologue from the original Julius Caesar text at this link. Please arrive to your appointment 15-20 minutes early to fill out an audition form.

PERFORMANCE DATES: August 1 - 16, 2015, tentatively scheduled for Saturdays at 2:00pm and 6:30pmand Sundays at 6:30pm. There may be additional Saturday or Sunday performances added within the production dates.

ABOUT THE PLAY: Actor / playwright Rome Neal sets the Bard’s classic tale in 13th century Mali. This multiple AUDELCO award-winning adaptation first premiered at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York City. Naomi Conn Liebler of The Shakespeare Bulletin called the production “...a theatrical miracle…”

ROLES AVAILABLE: All roles are open. We are looking for actors that will be believable as natives to Mali in the 13th century, however non-traditional, color-blind casting will be considered. Non-AEA actors will receive a stipend for their participation. There are no AEA contracts available for this production.

REHEARSALS: There will be 2 rehearsals per week in June and then up to 5 rehearsals a week in July.  The number of rehearsals per week for each actor will depend upon the amount of scenes in which they appear. Weeknight rehearsals will generally be from 6:00 - 9:00pm or 9:30pm. Saturday rehearsals could be morning or afternoon. Sunday rehearsals will be in the afternoon. Please mark your conflicts and availability carefully on your audition form: IE - “can arrive on all weeknights by 7pm” “available for rehearsals on weekdays as early as 5pm” “can arrive after church on Sunday by 1pm”.
