AUDITION PREPARATION
Karamu is seeking African American and Caucasian actors/singers/dancers, ages 12 and up.
Actors/Singers must prepare 1 up tempo song of your choosing. Singers must also be prepared
to sing acappella if asked. An accompanist will be provided. All Actors/Singers will
be asked to do a cold reading from the script. Please come prepared for light
movement. While the production of Xanadu jr. does not require rollerskating, we are looking
for rollerskaters ages 12 and up, for certain dance sequences.

ABOUT THE PLAY
Th is TONY Award-nominated hilarious, roller skating, musical adventure about following your
dreams despite the limitations others set for you, rolls along to the original hit score composed
by pop-rock legends Jeff Lynne and John. Based on the Universal Pictures’
movie of the same title, which starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. Xanadu Jr. follows
the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mt.
Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to
achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time - the fi rst ROLLER DISCO! (Hey, it’s 1980!) But,
when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of
the situation and chaos abounds.

REHEARSALS
Consists of a 8 week rehearsal schedule, 3-6 time per week. Th e cast will receive
a Rehearsal schedule by the fi rst cast meeting or fi rst rehearsal.

APRHODITE        
The Goddess of Love

CALLIOPE                       
Muse of Epics, is Melpomene’s “Wing-Muse.” She is equally devious and listens closely to her sister’s direction.

DANNY MAGUIRE          
 A real estate magnate and owner of the Xanadu theater. He goes from being guarded about protecting the theater to becoming partners with Sonny and then betraying him.

ENSEMBLE EROS, CYCLOPS, CENTAUR, MEDUSA, and the GREEK CHORUS
HERA 
Zeus’ wife and is known for her comparable status to her husband.

HERMES 
A hilarious cameo role for a performer with excellent comedic skills.

KIRA 
The Greek heroine and loveable, young ingénue. She begins the play as Clio, the youngest and the most idealistic of the Muses. With the addition of leg warmers and an Australian accent, she quickly becomes Kira to help Sonny realize his dreams. She is ambitious, smart and like Sonny, pure of heart.

MELPOMENE 
Muse of Tragedy, is the eldest of the Muses and is most responsible for plotting against Kira.

OTHER MUSES ERATO, EUTERPE, POLYHYMNIA, TERPISCHORE, THALIA and URANIA
SIRENS 
Melpomene’s alluring daughters.

SONNY MALONE
 T e young male lead from the beaches of California. He is wide-eyed, full of dreams and can be a bit sensitive; aft er all, he is an artist! While Sonny may not be the brightest, he is very sincere and earnest.

THE ANDREWS SISTERS (MAXENE, PATTY and LAVERNE) An exact duplicate of the Andrews Sisters that were famous in the 1940s.
THE TUBES  An iconic, hard-rockin’ new-wave band of the 80s.

THETIS
The Goddess of the Sea who tells the pivotal story of Achilles and his vulnerable heel, which in turn, changes Kira’s perspective about really loving Sonny.
