"Dogfight" is difficult to like.

This 2012 Off-Broadway musical by Peter Duchan, born from an off-beat 1991 non-musical indie film by Bob Comfort, features one of the nastiest boy-meets-girl scenarios imaginable.

It is 1963 and several young Marines decide to celebrate their last evening stateside by holding a "dogfight" - a long-standing tradition of bringing girls to a party to determine, without their knowledge, who is the ugliest. Each man antes $50 and heads off to find a date.

Handsome, cocksure and emotionally stunted Eddie Birdlace happens into a diner and finds Rose - a shy, unattractive and ungainly young waitress - who he easily manipulates into accompanying him to the party. What is, for her, a rare and wonderful night out with a boy is a way to kill some time, win some cash and have some laughs at another's expense for him.
