*Logline*:
In the wake of a hate crime, MICHAEL SCOTT, a high school senior is forced
to find the courage in himself to stand up and spark a change in inner-city
Cleveland while his life and family are ripped apart by gang violence.

*Synopsis*:
The story of KING follows the life and story of MICHAEL SCOTT through the
trials and tribulations of his senior year of high school.

MICHAEL SCOTT is his High School’s current valedictorian, entering his
senior year. Film opens to the Scott house hold, with MICHAEL studying
upstairs, along with his best friend TRE ALEXANDER. MICHAEL’S brother
JOSEPH SCOTT and his best friend and fellow gang member, RAY COLLINS are
drinking and getting high down stairs. When JOSEPH and RAY need a ride,
MICHAEL agrees to drive them to their brother, CHRISTOPHER SCOTT.
CHRISTOPHER is leader of a local gang, for the support and protection it
provides for his brothers. So when MICHAEL arrives with JOSEPH, CHRISTOPHER
becomes extremely upset with JOSEPH, because CHRISTOPHER has worked his
whole life to keep MICHAEL away from the gang lifestyle, hoping for a
better future for MICHAEL.

All within the opening scene, before CHRISTOPHER can convince MICHAEL to
leave the scene, the gang assaults DARRYL KING, who is left in a coma by
the time police arrive to make arrests. CHRISTOPHER is arrested for the
crime, JOSEPH flees the scene, and MICHAEL ends up being implicated as
being at the scene of the crime. The local news picks up the story that
will later be followed nation-wide, about a local gang assaulting an openly
gay DARRYL KING as a hate crime.

The next day in court, after CHRISTOPHER’S preliminary hearing, MICHAEL is
confronted by the Judge about his involvement in the assault, and offers
through the courts and his school, an option for alternative punishment
because of MICHAEL’S clean record. The punishment will be to become a
keynote speaker in several city-wide events sponsored by the city of
Cleveland, in celebration of 50 years of MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
MICHAEL is to speak on the topics of gang violence, his personal
experiences with how violence has torn his family apart, and what has (and
more importantly HAS NOT changed) in the 50 years since MLK’s famous speech.

The rest of the story chronicles MICHAEL’s struggles in school, with
friends, with family, and within himself in taking a stand against gang
violence, even if it means alienating friends and family. He struggles
through events like confronting each of his brothers, helping his drug
addicted mom, sending her to rehab, homelessness, and violence at school,
not to mention the media firestorm surrounding the story of CHRISTOPHER
SCOTT and the hate crime against DARRYL KING.

The movie culminates with MICHAEL’S speech at graduation, and the
implications of everyone’s decision to take a stand with MICHAEL against
gang violence, or not.
