The Department of Dance at Case Western Reserve University will continue
the 2014-2015 season with *Illuminated*, a thesis concert featuring works
by Master of Fine Arts candidates Hannah Barna and Amanda Clark in addition
to a work by guest choreographer and alumna Chun-Jou Tsai. Performances are
March 26, 27, 28 at 8 p.m. and March 29 at 2:30 p.m. at Mather Dance Center
on the Case Western Reserve campus.

The Illuminated program will include two premiere solo works by the MFA
candidates. *Vicissitude*, choreographed and performed by Clark uses music
by Sofia Gubaidulina and is the journey of a woman from a chrysalis-like
place to a place of higher being. *She who creates Light*, choreographed by
Barna features music by Henry Wolff and Nancy Henning, follows a woman who
has the ability to create light through movement.

Each MFA candidate also created a new group work for the program. *Harmony of
Dichotomies*, choreographed to music by Giza Frid, is Barna’s duet for two
female dancers that explores the similarities and differences between
ballet and modern dance. *Là, tout n’est qu’ordre et beauté – Luxe, calme
et volupté* is a trio performed to music by Lou Harrison. The inspiration
for this work came to Clark during a research trip to Europe made possible
through the Eva L. Pancoast Memorial Fellowship. The piece explores the
feminine figures of Henri Matisse’s painting Luxe, Calme, et Volupté in the
Musée D’Orsay in Paris, France. Charles Baudelaire’s poem *Invitation du
Voyage* served as inspiration to Matisse when creating this painting, and
provided additional inspiration for Clark’s choreography.

Graduate and undergraduate dance students will work for one week with Tsai,
who earned her MFA in dance from CWRU in 2013. Tsai’s work, *Time River*,
is choreographed to the music of Philip Glass and is an ensemble work for
eight dancers that explores the continuum of the natural phenomena of
people coming in and out of one’s life throughout our collective journeys
through time. At the heart of the dance is the seemingly unconscious
passing of time as well as the importance of living “in the here and now.”

*Illuminated* runs March 26, 27, 28 at 8 p.m. and March 29 at 2:30 p.m. All
performances take place at Mather Dance Center, 11201 Bellflower Road, on
the Case Western Reserve University campus. Tickets are $7 for students
with ID, $10 for adults 60+ and CWRU personnel, and $15 for general
admission. Reservations are recommended, and may be made by calling (216)
368-5246, or online at dance.case.edu/reservations.
