The Center for Applied Theatre and Active Culture (CATAC) and New World
Performance Laboratory (NWPL) seek NON-EQUITY actors (PAID) for the
development of a new musical, “Goosetown,” written and directed by JT Buck.
“Goosetown” is the second part of CATAC/NWPL’s “The Devil’s Milk Trilogy.”
When: Saturday, April 18th at 2PM
Sunday, April 19th at 6PM
Where:
The Balch Street Theatre
220 South Balch Street
Akron, Ohio 44302
Contact: Email JT Buck at buckjam at gmail.com

Performance Dates:
We will present TWO weekends of ‘open rehearsals’ this summer. Actors will
be asked to rehearse for approximately 3 weeks prior to EACH weekend of
‘open rehearsals.’ Rehearsal schedule will be written in collaboration with
artist availability.

Open Weekend One: June 19-21. 8PM Friday and Saturday, 2PM Sunday.
Open Weekend Two: August 14-16. 8PM Friday and Saturday, 2PM Sunday.

Available Roles
Female Characters:
- The Lady: 50s. German immigrant, proprietor of prosperous local
brewery. In early stages of Alzheimer’s.
- The Woman: 20s-40s. The Boy’s mother. Sensual, capricious.

Male Characters:
- The Man: 20’s. Tall, Strong, rugged.
- The Boy: Early to mid-teens. Precocious and intelligent
- The Baron: 40s-50s. Wealthy, relentless entrepreneur

Gender-Flexible/Age-flexible
- Pigmeat: African-American. Seen by others as the local eccentric,
wandering the streets selling small wares and singing strange songs. But
of course, there’s more.

How to Prepare:

1. If you can play a musical instrument with intermediate proficiency or
higher, please bring it! (This is not a casting requirement, just a plus!)

2. Please come dressed comfortably for movement. There will be NO dance
requirement in the audition, but the ultimate performance may include
learning basic German folk dances (polka, waltz, etc…).

3. Please prepare ONE song which demonstrates both vocal range and ‘heart’
connection AND one short monologue or poem, both memorized and not to
exceed 5 minutes TOTAL. Accompanist will be provided. Please provide
readable music, clearly marked, and in the correct key. NO A CAPPELLA OR
PRE-RECORDED MUSIC! All selections should be memorized. Actors may be
asked to cold-read a short section of the script. Auditioners will be
heard one-on one and may be asked for a callback.

A word on ‘style’:
The score is generally Americana/Folk-style with some contemporary
influences. Actors should be able to learn music quickly, and professional
training is not a prerequisite. German folk or art songs, American folk or
contemporary Americana, or songs from musical theatre scores such as ‘Big
River’, ‘Billy Elliot’ and ‘The Fantastiks’, etc….would be appropriate.

Performance Schedule
We will present TWO weekends of ‘open rehearsals’, one in late June and one
in mid-late August. We’ll work for approximately 2-3 weeks of consistent
daily rehearsals preceding each weekend. Schedule can be flexible based
around actor conflicts, and performance dates will be finalized by the time
of auditions. Please BRING YOUR CALENDAR TO AUDITION! A determination of
the dates of performance for a FULL production of the show will be
announced by August.

About the show:
Spring, 1913. All the world rolls into Akron, Ohio on a river of white,
raw rubber fresh from the jungles of the equator...tainted by the blood of
unknown slaves.

As City booms, Man is busted into parts for the machine. Family is cracked
like concrete...broken by and underground torrent myth buried so deep it
can only be known in songs of the mad.

Strikes and floods, Sex and fortunes, plagues and gangs, fathers and sons,
the raw materials of nature transformed by obsession into the treasures of
men...

Akron. Hell. You ain't been nowhere near the like of it.....

“The Devil’s Milk Trilogy” is funded in part by a generous grant from
Knight Foundation.
