> *Mother Sud --- An older woman who functions as the “neighborhood memory.”  She lives in an inner city neighborhood that has decayed over the years.  She is a modern day griot.
>  
> *'Bread --- He is the deceased husband of Mother Sud and the narrator of the story.  He is an older man who walks with a hitch and smokes a pipe.
>  
> *Patricia --- She is the beloved daughter-in-law of Mother Sud.
>  
> Will --- He is the son of Mother Sud who is a busy politician who is running for public office.
>  
> {Duel Roles}Mr. Jackson--- A feuding older couple from the neighborhood / Doctor Davidson --- He is the physician who is treating Mother Sud in the hospice.
>  
> {Duel Roles} Mrs. Jackson/ Sister Cheney ( Church Women) --- A feuding older couple from the neighborhood.
>  
> {Duel Roles}Morse --- A service man from the neighborhood who marries Keisha. / Doctor Wilhelm --- The first doctor to treat Mother Sud in the hospital. 
>  
> {Duel Roles} Keisha Harden / Sister Bush (Church Women) --- A neighborhood girl who marries a military man who is also from the neighborhood.
>  
> Pastor Sturgess --- An effeminate church official who used to be homosexual but now claims to be completely “healed” of his homosexual desires by Christ.  He is the younger brother Patricia.
>  
> Pastor Graham --- He is the minister of the church that Mother Sud left years ago.  He is also supporting her son who is running in a tight race to get elected.
>  
> Church Women: Sister Bush, Sister Cheney, Sister Rove ---- Devout church women who come to see Mother Sud in the hospital to assist Pastor Graham in a “praise healing.”
>  
> Lorenda --- A young girl who comes to visit Mother Sud.
>  
> {Duel Roles} Dorita/ Sister Rove (Church Women) --- The mother of Lorenda.  She has a drinking problem.
>
