Description:
Costumer

REPORTSTO:  Artistic Director, Playmakers Youth Theatre

POSITIONSUMMARY:

Costume designers create the look of each character bydesigning clothes and accessories the actors will wear in performance.Depending on their style and complexity, costumes may be made, bought, revampedout of existing stock or rented.

The shapes, colors and textures that a costumedesigner chooses make an immediate and powerful visual statement to theaudience. Creative collaboration among the costume designer, the director andthe set and lighting designers ensures that the costumes are smoothlyintegrated into the production as a whole.

Stage costumes can provide audiences withinformation about a character's occupation, social status, gender, age, senseof style and tendencies towards conformity or individualism. As well, costumescan:

·     reinforcethe mood and style of the production

·     distinguishbetween major and minor characters

·     suggestrelationships between characters

·     change anactor's appearance

·     suggestchanges in character development and age

·     beobjects of beauty in their own right.

Costume designs also need to include anyaccessories such as canes, hats, gloves, shoes, jewelry or masks. These costumeprops add a great deal of visual interest to the overall costume design. Theyare often the items that truly distinguish one character from another.

RESPONSIBILITIES (May include any or all of the following and may beamended.)

   - Costumedesigners begin their work by reading the script to be produced. If theproduction is set in a specific historical era, the fashions of this periodwill need to be researched. To stimulate the flow of ideas at the first meetingwith the director and the design team (set, costume, lighting and sounddesigners), the costume designer may want to present a few rough ideas. This isalso an appropriate time to check with the director on the exact number ofcharacters needing costumes, as any non-speaking characters the director plansto include may not have been listed in the script.

   - Itis the costume designer's responsibility to develop the costume plot. Thecostume plot is a list or chart that shows which characters appear in eachscene, what they are wearing and their overall movement throughout the play. This helps track the specific costume needs of every character. It can alsoidentify any potential costume challenges, such as very quick changes betweenscenes.

   - Whenthe director has approved the costume designer's preliminary ideas, she or hecan develop the final costume designs. They show the style, silhouette, textures, accessories and unique features of each costume.
   - Thecostumer should be aware that Playmakers double casts (most but not all) of itsshows.  Costumes should be made toaccommodate both casts, when possible.

   - Thecostumer will bag, label and distribute costumes at the beginning of tech weekfor each cast.
   - Thecostumer is responsible for laundering all costumes between shows that aredouble cast.  This must be done on theMonday of tech week for Cast B.  Awashing facility will be provided.
   - Thecostumer is responsible for ensuring all costumes were returned between Cast Aand B and making any amendments to the garment to fit the second cast, fix any ripsor tears, remove any stains.
   - Thecostumer is responsible for collecting all costumes at the end of the show’srun and returning them, laundered, to the costume storage facility.  It is the costumer’s responsibility to ensurethat the storage facility remains in the order in which it began.  Items should be placed back in theappropriate area by type of garment and era. Any costumes that cannot be repaired should be brought to the attentionof the Director immediately.
