How I Learned to Stop Fretting and Love the Bard







In preparation for the exhibition of Shakespeare’s First Folio at the
Cleveland Public Library from June 20th to July 30th, 2016, the English
Speaking Union, the Rowfant Club, The Hermit Club, and the Cleveland Public
Library is presenting a series of seminars for those who are not
necessarily students of Shakespeare but who want a better understanding of
and familiarity with the Bard.



The first seminar will be presented this Sunday at 2:00 PM.  Subsequent
seminars are scheduled once a month through April.  All the Seminars will
be presented at the Hermit Club, 1629 Dodge Court (at E 15th and Chester).



The English Speaking Union is an international organization dedicated to
preserving the beauty and power of the English language.  The Rowfant Club
is 120 year old bibliophile club.  The Hermit Club is an organization
devoted to the performing arts.

January 17, 2 to 4 pm.  Everyone in London knew “the poet” but some very
smart people don’t think he wrote the plays that bear his name.  What was
the practical life of an actor and a playwright during the reigns of
Elizabeth and James?    What was the make-up of his audience Presented by
Neil Thackaberry, founder, Actors’ Summit Theater. Social hour afterwards.



February 14: 2 to 4 pm On Valentine’s Day, we ask how did Shakespeare treat
women? How do you handle romantic love and sex on stage when, in order to
keep the theater moral, the Protestants insist that all the women’s roles
be played by boys?  Presented by Terry Burgler, Artistic Director of Ohio
Shakespeare Festival.

March 13: 2 to 4 pm *Romeo and Juliet* is “the two hour traffic of our
stage. The actors must speak rapidly so here’s your cheat sheet to keep up.
How best to experience a play by Shakespeare. Presented by Kevin P. Kerns,
Chair, Dept. of Theater at University of Mount Union.



April 10:  2 to 4 pm William’s mind. How has the mind of Shakespeare, over
the last 400 years, made a profound difference in the way we all think?
Shakespeare is an international figure and his influence has and is being
felt around the world. Presented by Phyllis Gorfain, Professor of English
Emerita at Oberlin College and Founder and Director, Oberlin Drama at
Grafton.
