*You don't often hear audible gasps in the theatre these days. Audiences
have gotten so sophisticated and/or so jaded that very little surprises
playgoers anymore. You will, however, hear your fair share of gasps -- and
most likely gasp yourself -- when you go to see Proof at Clague Playhouse.
That is because this modern-day drama by David Auburn plays out like a
mathematical mystery, filled with plenty of twists, turns, discoveries and
revelations. Auburn's script is one of the most praise-worthy stage works
in contemporary theatre. It won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony for
Best Play, it gets produced on a regular basis in regional venues, and was
even turned into a feature film. And the reason why is surprisingly simple
-- because it's a well-structured, intelligent, engaging and ultimately
enlightening piece of drama. Each and every one of director Anne McEvoy's
creative choices in helming this show have added up to a quantifiable
success. Her naturalistic approach to the material, her patient pacing, her
realistic blocking, and her adroit casting of four consummate performers
