There were three things that 9-year-old Joel Grey – then Joel Katz – feared most while living on Cleveland’s east side in the 1930s and 1940s:  his mother’s erratic mood swings, the rampant antisemitism that awaited him around every corner, and that others would learn that he was attracted to boys.



These fears are the threads that run through the world-renowned entertainer’s new, immediately accessible memoir “Master of Ceremonies” (Flatiron Books), the writing of which he called “painful but liberating ” in a 10-minute phone interview with the Cleveland Jewish News upon the book’s release.
