HATHAWAY BROWN THEATRE INSTITUTE SPECIALTY CLASSES

Hathaway Brown Theatre Institute - 2016 (HBTI) offers premiere training in
acting, musical theatre and dance for students from 1st grade through
college. Included this summer some very unique specialty classes.

*The Actor's Instrument-Movement and Voice*: This is a physical course
that helps actors to strengthen and develop their "instrument". Students
will learn about flexibility, body alignment and how to tell the story
using their physicality. Vocally they will learn to connect to their
breath, develop resonance, range and build their vocal strength. (Acting
Focus)

*Acting* for the Camera: This course has the students study the differences
between acting for the stage and acting for the camera. Students will learn
about auditions, cold readings, industrial films, commercials, professions
criticism and acting for feature films. Attention will also be given to
college pre-screening videos.(Acting focus)

*Acting* for the Dancer: In this class the dancers will explore the
question, "How does dance move the story forward?" Dance is integrated
into performance to advance the plot and character in the same way a
that singing a song advances the story. With this type of understanding
dance communicates something honest and specific and turns movement into
meaning. The student will explore intention, character development
action-objectives
and obstacles. to tell a story through the medium of dance. ( Dance focus)

*Stage Combat-Hand to Hand (level 1), Weapons (level 2)*: Level 1 teaches
the student the fundamentals of hand to hand combat such as slaps, punches,
pushes, kicks, falls and hair pulls. Level 2 adds the fundamentals of
sword handling in a safe and supportive environment. (Acting, Dance and
Musical Theatre Focus)

Partnering:This technique develops relationship and co-operative skill.
Students will learn about leading, following, weight sharing, weight
transfer and the body mechanics of lifts, catches and balances. Also
emphasized in this course are the safety aspects of proper spotting. (Dance
and Musical Theatre Focus)
