PARADE

1913. Marietta, Georgia. A teenage girl is found murdered in the factory where she works. The town wants justice at any cost, and all eyes turn to her supervisor, a Brooklyn Jew who has never fit in with their southern way of life. Grief, ambition and tragedy come together for a beautiful and stirring musical that challenges our own prejudices.
PERFORMANCES
May 5-21
Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30PM
Sundays at 3:00PM
REHEARSALS
Begin late March, and usually occur weekday evenings and weekend day/evening hours
AUDITIONS
Monday, December 5th & Tuesday, December 6th from 7:00PM to 10:00PM
Please prepare two short contrasting musical selections in the style of the show (contemporary musical theater)

Actors ages 18 and up receive a stipend.

ROLES
A Note About Casting: Parade will be performed with actors doubling and tripling roles. Many of the characters will also play townspeople, mourners, guards, jurors, reporters, etc.). Almost all roles have strong vocal features.
Leo Frank (Male 25-35) - Our story's tragic protagonist accused of murder. As National Pencil Factory Superintendent, Leo is neurotic and a serial pessimist. Though married to Lucielle, he is physically and emotionally displaced. A White Jew from the North.
Lucille Frank (Female 25-35) - Gentle and mousy, but resourceful and resilient. Despite her husband's feelings, she is a true Southerner but can see through the deception. A White Jew from Georgia.
Jim Conley (Male 20-30) - A cleaning supervisor at National Pencil Factory. Secretly, he is a convict on the run. Pompous showman with a strong build. Black Georgian.
Mary Phagan (Female 13) - A factory worker at the National Pencil Factory who is murdered. She is very innocent but has moments of sassiness and playfulness. White Georgian.
Frankie Epps/Young Soldier (Male 14-18) - A charming and simple man, he is Mary's devoted friend. Playful and flirtatious. White Georgian.
Hugh Dorsey (Male 30-45) - Atlanta's District Attorney. He is a devout Christian, who is brute and manipulative at times. Hungry for political success and recognition. White Georgian.
Governor John Slaton (Male 30-45) - As the Governor of Georgia, he is highly concerned with public perception. Flirtatious and fun at times. Strives to maintain his values. White Southerner.
Tom Watson (Male 25-45) - The passionate editor of the zealot newspaper, The Jeffersonian. He arrives to incite controversy and eventually leads an angry mob. White Georgian.
Judge Roan/Old Soldier (Male 50-70) - Serves as the Judge on the infamous trial. Motivated by bigotry and racism, he is dangerously committed to the ideals of the Confederacy. White Georgian.
Mrs. Phagan/Sally Slaton (Female 30-45) - Mary's mother, lower class and seeking vindication for her daughter's murder. White Georgian. Sally is the Governor's wife, popular. White Southerner.
Britt Craig (Male 25-45) - A washed up reporter who can often be found three sheets to the wind. Weaselly and desperate for his 'big break.' White Georgian.
Minnie McKnight/Angela (Female) - Leo and Lucille's maid who sees the racial injustice. Black Southerner.
Newt Lee/Riley (Male) - The night watchman at the National Pencil Factory. Initially a suspect, but dismissed and later serves as a witness. Intimidated by the police. Black Southerner.
Luther Rosser (Male) - Leo's lawyer. Not equipped for this type of case, a drinker. White Southerner.
Iola, Monteen and Essie (Females 13-18) - Factory workers at the National Pencil Factory who were friends of Mary and called to testify. White Georgians.
