THE POSITION

The artistic director is responsible for conceiving, developing, and
implementing the artistic vision and focus of

planning, production, education, and the performance of various executive
and managerial functions. The artistic director will share with the board of
directors and the managing director the responsibilities for artistic
growth, financial stability, and service to the South-Central Indiana
community inherent in the mission of Cardinal Stage Company. The artistic
director will create and execute a vision that engages, challenges, and
inspires diverse audiences.

 

THE CANDIDATE

The successful candidate is a passionate, collaborative, and
community-minded theatre artist with experience setting and executing the
artistic direction of a professional theatre company. The preferred
candidate is a successful theatre director with a love for a broad range of
theatrical experiences. The preferred candidate is also experienced in
professional new play development and production. He/she is also capable of
working collaboratively with a board of directors and the managing director
to leverage resources and develop key donor relationships with individuals,
foundations, and corporations, as well as develop mutually beneficial
partnerships with other local arts organizations and public institutions.

The mission of Cardinal Stage Company is to advance professional theatre in
Bloomington. We aim to cultivate a lifelong passion for the stage by
offering diverse, high quality productions in tandem with outreach and
educational initiatives that contribute to the cultural and economic
vibrancy of South-Central Indiana.

 

THE VISION

Cardinal Stage Company is recognized throughout the region for excellence in
programming and community outreach from our state of the art performance
facility. With a fully professional staff and an emerging national profile,
Cardinal is a key contributor to the quality of life in South-Central
Indiana.

 

THE ORGANIZATION

In just ten years, Cardinal has grown into the largest independent arts
organization in Bloomington, Indiana with an annual operating budget of $1.2
million and supporting a full-time staff of seven. Over the years, Cardinal
has generated hundreds jobs for artists and introduced an entire generation
of Bloomington children to professional live theatre, giving away thousands
of free tickets to families who need them most. Cardinal programs a range of
material to compliment the diverse interests of Bloomington and the
surrounding region. The consistent factor is that Cardinal shows are
critically praised and popular with audiences throughout South-Central
Indiana. 

 

In 2017, Cardinal Stage will enter a period of organizational transition
with the departure of Founding Artistic Director Randy White. Cardinal is
working tirelessly to build on his significant and distinguished legacy,
viewing his departure as a sign of the healthy evolution of the now
10-year-old company.

 

Cardinal Stage Company works with Actors' Equity Association under a
Category 8 Small Professional Theatre Agreement.

 

 

 

THE PLACE

Bloomington is the home to Indiana University Bloomington, the original and
largest campus of Indiana University. The city is known for its welcoming
Midwestern charm, world-class education institutions, rich and diverse arts
and culture, picturesque rolling hills, and affordability, making it a
coveted place to live, work, learn, and play. 

 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Artistic

.        Create production seasons based on collective community interest,
company history, and current artistic, financial, and educational
imperatives.

.        Maintain productive, collaborative relationships with area venues. 

.        Promote a level of artistic excellence and diversity that expands
Cardinal's audience and reach.

.        Work to utilize and develop the talents of local youth and adult
artists.

.        Ensure each production is properly and fully staffed. This includes
facilitating the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of all artistic
personnel including directors, actors, performers, designers, stage
managers, etc.

.        Ensure each production maintains a level of excellence and
professionalism throughout the run of the production. This includes
addressing issues that may arise during the run, be they technical, cast,
crew or facility-related.

.        Ensure that proper contracts and licensing agreements are in place
and that Cardinal policies and Theatre Industry Best Management practices
are being followed.

.        Promote a creative culture that helps attract the best actors,
designers, and creative artists from around the country.

.        Ensure that a consistent artistic vision is brought to all theatre
endeavors.

.        Support marketing activities in those areas where the work involves
artistic or creative decisions.

.        Oversee guest artists and Cardinal staff communications, and ensure
they are working well together, communicating, and staying on budget.

 

Financial

.        Develop a production budget for each season in collaboration with
the production manager and managing director to be approved by the board of
directors

.        Supervise and manage all production budget expenditures.

.        Negotiate contracts with actors, agents, and rights holders.

 

Community Relations

.        Ensure constant organization-wide focus on deepening patron
relationships and increasing repeat attendance through enhanced customer
service, audience engagement, and targeted marketing.

.        Maintain high visibility and actively participate in the community,
while building relationships with donors and potential donors through
community outreach.

 

Organizational Management

.        Foster an environment of clear communications and expectations with
staff.

.        Report regularly to the chair of the board of directors and attend
scheduled board meetings and other meetings as requested.

.        Work closely with the managing director to facilitate a positive
working environment

.        Work with the managing director and board of directors to fill any
vacancies in direct report staff.

.        Supervise staff through daily oversight.

.        Lead by example.
