Weathervane’s ‘It’s Only a Play’ sets the stage for success

There’s no business like show business, as the Weathervane Playhouse production of “It’s Only a Play” so beautifully and hysterically demonstrates.

The broad comedy – which originally opened off-off Broadway in 1982, was revived off-Broadway in 1986, and revived again with an all-star cast on Broadway in 2014 – takes place at the opening night after-party of the Broadway debut of “The Golden Egg.” While a crowd of celebrities, Broadway elite, and local politicians mingle downstairs at the producer’s Manhattan townhouse, the production’s creative team and a few friends anxiously await the reviews in an upstairs bedroom suite.

The room is bursting with over-inflated egos, high tension in anticipation of a New York Times review that could make or break the new show and, thanks to director Fred Gloor’s impeccable comic timing, no shortage of hilarity.
