*Godspell - 2012 Revised Version*

Directed by Michael Larochelle
Music Direction by David Bird

*Auditions:* Tuesday, October 10 and Wednesday, October 11 at 7:30 pm. No
appointment is required.
Please bring current photo or headshot along with your resume.

*Show Dates:* January 12 - February 4, 2018 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday
at 8 pm and Sunday at 2 pm.

Conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak (from Berea, Ohio
and a Clague Playhouse Alum), with music and new lyrics by Stephen
Schwartz, *Godspell *is one of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway
successes of all time. Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew, and
featuring a sparkling score by Schwartz, *Godspell* boasts a string of
well-loved songs, led by the international hit, “Day By Day.” As the cast
performs “Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord,” “Learn Your Lessons Well,” “All
For The Best,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man” and “By My Side,” the
parables of Jesus Christ come humanly and hearteningly to life. Drawing
from various theatrical traditions, such as clowning, pantomime, charades,
acrobatics and vaudeville, *Godspell* is a groundbreaking and unique
theatrical experience, with a message of kindness, tolerance and love. The
2018 Clague Playhouse production of *Godspell* will use the 2012 Revised
Version of the script and score.

*Seeking diverse ensemble of 5 women and 5 men, ages 15 to 50.* Flexible
casting and all roles featured. Ideal cast members will be energetic
performers who sing, dance and act, and can enthusiastically embrace the
child-like joy of the script and stories. Hope to find several performers
who also play a musical instrument (especially acoustic guitar, percussion,
piano, recorder and ukelele). All types and ethnicities are encouraged to
audition. Each actor will bring his or her own personality traits to the
production. All roles open.

All auditions begin at 7:30 pm, unless otherwise noted. No appointment is
required.
Please bring current photo or headshot along with your resume.

*Character Descriptions* (based on the original cast):
*Jesus:* the most charismatic of the group. Charming, engaging, High
energy, funny, gentle but with strength. He is the sort of person others
instinctively follow. (Tenor - G# top note / Save The People)

*John the Baptist/Judas:* has attributes of both Biblical figures: He is
both Jesus’ lieutenant and most ardent disciple and the doubter who begins
to question and rebel. Like Jesus, he is also charismatic, but in more of
an overt revolutionary way. He is the most “serious” and intellectual of
the group, though as with all the actors, he must still possess a good
sense of physical comedy. (Baritone Eb top note / Prepare Ye)

*Jeffrey:* very high energy, impish and playful. (Tenor-falsetto high D
above staff / We Beseech Thee)

*Lamar:* not necessarily the brightest in the bunch. There is a great
sweetness and innocence about him. (Tenor-high A / All Good Gifts)

*Herb:* the comedian, the class clown. The guy who can do a hundred voices
and imitations. (Baritone, should have an E for harmonies / Light of the
World)

*Robin:* open and sweet, could be a bit of a tomboy. She is the first of
the group to commit to following Jesus. (Alto or Mezzo / Day By Day)

*Joanne:* the confident one, the show-off. The first to volunteer,
sometimes jumps in before she really understands what’s going on.
(Soprano-high A / Bless the Lord)

*Peggy:* the shy one. Sometimes a little slow to get things, but when she
does, she commits all the way. She has an “Earth Mother” kind of warmth to
her. (Alto / By My Side)

*Sonia:* sassy and slightly cynical, the most urban of the group. Also the
“sexy”one, but her sexiness contains a large element of put-on, in the
manner of Mae West or Madonna (who in fact once played the role). (Alto-low
D / Turn Back O Man)

*Gilmer:* the female equivalent of the class clown. Goofy and a cut-up.
This is the female role that sings least, and therefore, should be cast
with a strong comedienne. (Mezzo / Learn Your Lessons Well)
