By 1918, radium was a miracle cure and Marie Curie was a national celebrity. Radium was put in everything, from a ‘health elixir’ of radium dissolved in water called RadiThor, to a mixture of paint to make luminous watches and clocks that glowed in the dark. These watches were being used by the soldiers of WWI and their demand was high. Young teenage girls were hired to paint these watches for the Radium Corporation in Orange, New Jersey. These girls became town celebrities, everyone wanted to be them. They glowed like ghosts as they walked home at night from the radium dust on their clothes and skin. Like china painters, they used their mouths to get a fine point on their brushes, which caused them to ingest some of the radium. The company told them radium would make them look younger. After a few years, suddenly they all started having issues with their mouths, and anemia. One by one they began to become deathly ill and die painful deaths. Visits to dentists and doctors did not help, no one could discover the cause. Radium Girls tells the story of how these amazing girls fought day in and day out to find out why they were sick, and then when radiation poisoning was finally named the culprit, their fight turned against the company that not only failed to protect them, but had repeatedly covered up the dangerous effects of radium. The girls’ brave fight against the big corporation that denied all responsibility for their illness had a significant impact on the formulation of occupational disease <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupational_disease> labor law <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_law>.

The MLS Theatre Company is a student-run organization. Every student involved in the productions is between the ages 14-18 and students take care of every aspect of the theatre productions. With a director, tech director, and assistant sponsor supervising, students are given leadership positions in order to design and build the sets, lights, sound, props, costumes, makeup, programs, publicity, and programs for the theatre. Students also run the Box Office and front of house. Each year, three shows are put on for the public. This year's season includes Radium Girls, student directed Winter Festival of Plays and the spring musical, Happy Days.
