Learn how to jitterbug from 8-9 with Valerie Salstrom of Get Hep Swing. No need to have previous dance experience or bring a partner. This lesson is perfect for beginner through advanced dancers. 

Come to dance, to learn, to listen, to socialize! This event is a party with fun music and dancing!

The cost is $12 per person. No discounts for this special event.

No need to bring a dance partner as we rotate partners during the lesson. If you would prefer not to rotate, that is fine too.

9-12 The Moonshine Rhythm Club from Nashville hits the stage. 

Moonshine Rhythm Club brings old-school swing and jazz to life with joyful arrangements and energetic playing that makes this vintage music sound like it was written this morning. The boys seek out deep cuts from the 30s and 40s, take their favorite parts from classic big band recordings, and distill them into their signature sound. That sound draws on the guitar-driven, acoustic fire of gypsy jazz, as well as the slow burn and laid-back groove of later artists like Count Basie and Nat “King” Cole. On top of this lays classy and hip vocals with a lighthearted humor.

Most of the band members grew up in the modern jazz scene. They loved the playful energy and improvisation of the music but eventually found it lacking in audience accessibility. They discovered a broad appeal in the trad jazz revival of New York, New Orleans and elsewhere, music filled with catchy melodies and a danceable, swinging groove.

Rhythm guitarist Eddie Rutland, in the meantime, was immersed in the Lindy Hop dance scene, honing his rhythmic skills as an award-winning swing dancer and instructor. When he and lead vocalist/guitarist Ryan Leet decided to start a gypsy jazz band, they pulled in veteran bass and tuba player Eric Heveron-Smith, who has appeared with many of the notable bandleaders of the vintage swing renaissance, including Bria Skonberg, Michael Gamble, Jonathan Stout and Solomon Douglas. Heveron-Smith’s mellow vocals provide a perfect complement to the effortless cool of Leet’s voice. The addition of Charles Kay on sax and clarinet and Josh Irwin on electric archtop guitar solidified their American swing roots.

Moonshine Rhythm Club has brought its energetic acoustic presence from its hometown scene of Nashville to festivals and dances around the country. They tour heavily, trying to bring vintage music to audiences both initiated and unfamiliar with jazz. Their regular street performances turn the heads and grab the hearts of passers-by. They have also done performances and educational workshops for kids, including a Christmas collaboration with the world-renowned puppeteers at the Nashville Library. Currently, the band is working on a series of EPs paying homage to bandleaders that have inspired them, beginning with Artie Shaw, Django Reinhardt and Count Basie.

We have some of the biggest swing dances in the area with over 150 people attending each month. Attendees have a variety of dance experience (including none) and come from all walks of life and ages. You will not need to bring a dance partner. We rotate partners during the dance lesson. How often do you get to meet 50-100 new people in under an hour? We provide the highest quality swing dance instruction from some of the nicest, most patient people you will ever meet. Our staff includes regional, national and international swing dance competitors (and winners) in multiple swing dance forms. 

We welcome anyone to join us who has an interest in dance, music, socializing and fun. We don't care what your physical ability or size is, where you are in life, where you are on the spectrum of sexual or gender orientation, what color or creed, or non-creed, you are. Are you a man who wants to learn how to follow or a woman who wants to learn how to lead? That's cool! This idea is not new to the swing dance scene. We are the easiest club to join. If you have an interest, you are in. :)

We love spreading the gospel of swing dancing and we are excited to share the language and culture of this truly American, urban folk dance form with you. It is important for us to let you know that this dance style started in the African-American ballrooms of Harlem, New York in the late 1920s/early 1930s. This dance has a gritty earthiness that is incredibly empowering and joyful. We can't wait for you to experience this conversation of dance with us.

Attire is anything from casual to dressy. The best shoes to wear are comfortable and will allow you to pivot and turn easily. 

The Waterloo Ballroom at the Slovenian Workmen's Home is located in the very artsy and lively Collinwood neighborhood. The address is 15335 Waterloo Rd, Cleveland, Ohio 44110.

The Slovenian not only has a beautiful ballroom; they also have a well-stocked bar. They have alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks of all kinds for sale--including a very special Slovenian beer- Lasko! There will also be some sweet and savory snacks for sale as well.

The sign for the Slovenian has been taken down so please look for the sign for Packy Malleys. Our entrance is just to the left of them. There are TWO parking lots to the right of the ballroom and there is also some street parking as well. We also have a security guard who keeps an eye on the hall and both parking lots.
