CPH Season Extras - Taking A Knee

FREE CPH SEASON EXTRA
SUNDAY, MAY 27 | 4:00 PM
Outcalt Theatre at Playhouse Square

Don't miss this FREE up close and personal conversation between The Royale Director and CPH Associate Artistic Director, Robert Barry Fleming and three time Super Bowl Champion Je'Rod Cherry. No RSVP necessary!

Together they will explore the last century of the African-American professional athlete and how simply by participating in the professional arena, they are perceived as making a political statement. Jack Johnson, an African-American heavyweight champion is a boxing legend, for initiating the "Fight of the Century" in 1910, in which he challenged James J. Jeffries, his white counterpart. This true story in 1910, in which The Royale is based, is a story that has reverberated through the decades and the last century. From Jack Johnson, who had to take a stand in order to be declared the Heavyweight Champion of the World, not just for the 'colored' championship, to the Cleveland Summit in 1967, when professional African-American athletes came together to support Muhammad Ali on draft-dodging the Vietnam War, to present day of "Taking the Knee," a long-standing tradition, but recently became a news feeding frenzy as African-American athletes began "taking the knee" during the National Anthem to show their solidarity against racial injustices happening across the country, and when Cleveland favorite, LeBron James took a political stance in an interview, Laura Ingraham of Fox News told him to "Shut up and dribble." Should athletes use the professional platform for civil discourse on social injustice? What is the difference between athletes and stars at the Academy Awards(r)?

All this and more will be explored in "Taking a Knee" immediately following the May 27th performance of The Royale.
