Touring ‘Cinderella’ is the tonic for what ails you

You’re welcome.

If you choose to turn off the news, put down your cell phone, forget Facebook and head downtown to Playhouse Square to see the touring production of “Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella,” you will thank me for recommending these two and a half hours of unabashedly romantic, unadulterated, uninterrupted escapism.

“Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella” opened on Broadway in 2013, ran for nearly two years, and has been on national tour since 2014. The high-end equity production that came through Playhouse Square in 2015 retained the immense charm of the televised primetime specials that, in the 1950s and 1960s, introduced a generation to the wonders of musical theater and the works of two legendary songsmiths. It also reproduced the big-budgeted spectacle that was the Broadway production and maintained the fairytale’s essential sense of wonder and discovery first introduced in the Disney animated film in 1950.

The smaller budgeted non-equity rendition currently on tour and on stage at the Connor Palace Theatre, which is directed by Gina Rattan and choreographed by Lee Wilkins, does the same.
