Seeking a cast of 12-15 dedicated adults and students. Shortened rehearsal
schedule (5 weeks) for performances at Lake Erie College, Theatre 815,
Berkshire High School, and possible venues in Chardon and Euclid.

The Star on My Heart is a true story about Holocaust suvivor and I Am a
Star author Inge Auerbacher. It follows Inge's story of her time before the
war in Germany, during her time in the Terezin concentration camp, and then
of her recovery and struggle with tuberculosis in America after the war.

AUDITION DATES:

September 18 & 19, 6:30-9pm at the Chardon Chalet (220 Basquin Drive,
Chardon, OH 44024--near CHS and Public swimming pool)

Be prepared to read from the script.

SHOW DATES:

Nov. 8-9: Theatre 815 (Green, Ohio)

Nov. 15-16: Lake Erie College

Dec. 6-7: Berkshire High School

REHEARSALS:

All rehearsals will take place at Celebration Lutheran Church and Cherry
Knoll Farm in Chardon. Rehearsals will typically run Sunday-Thursday. Not
everyone will be called every day.

STUDENT PRODUCTIONS:

There will be several school day shows. ALL ADULT ROLES will be double cast
with students for school day performances. Students must be available
during the school day on the following: Nov. 1, 8, 15, Dec. 6. School
excuse notes will be provided.

ROLES FOR TEENS & KIDS Roles with a * may be doubled with other roles.

INGE AUERBACHER: Female, age 11-21 throughout the show. German accent. Her
character begins immediately after liberation from the Terezin
concentration camp. She is struggling with coming to terms with the war
years, recovery from tuberculosis, and the desire to start leading a normal
life after relocating to post-war America. She must learn to accept that
the effects from the Holocaust will follow both her both mentally and
physically for the rest of her life and how she will turn her experiences
into something worth fighting for.

YOUNG INGE: Female, age 6-10 throughout the show. Strong, mature, and
focused young actress required. Feisty and outgoing, yet she slowly begins
to lose her innocence as tragedy begins to take away her childhood. She
learns to be resourceful in the Terezin concentration camp, and as time
goes on begins to develop the fierce determination and attitude that will
be with her the rest of her life.

*RUTH ABRAHAM: Female, age 8-10. Gentle spirit. Young Christian girl sent
to Terezin due to her mother’s Jewish background. Faithful.

*ADA: Female, age 8-13. Vocalist needed. Befriends Inge in Terezin and
teaches her about hope and the power of music.

*TOMMY RINDER: Male, age 10-13. Befriends Inge and Ruth while in Terezin.
Knows the ins and outs of the camp and brave beyond his years.

*HARRY: Male, age 15. Puerto Rican. Has just relocated to the tuberculosis
ward in NYC from Puerto Rico. Learning English. Kind. Inge’s first
boyfriend.

*MARY-ANN: Female, age 7. Crybaby and loud. Sick with tuberculosis, in a
hospital ward in NYC.

*HARVEY: Male, age 10-13. Outgoing, mischevious, eager to disobey. Sick
with tuberculosis, in a hospital ward in NYC.

*VINA: Female, age 13-16. African American. No-nonsense. Sick with
tuberculosis, in a hospital ward in NYC.

*ELISABETH: Female, age 7-9. Young German girl, Inge’s best friend before
the war.

*EVELYN: Female, age 16-18. New Yorker. Bubble gum chewing, outgoing, a
little brash.

*HENRY: Male, age 18-21. Polish. Sweet talker. Inge’s first serious
relationship. Proposes to Inge, but breaks it off after he learns she is in
remission from TB.

ROLES FOR ADULTS Roles with a * may double with other characters.

BERTHOLD AUERBACHER: Male, late 20s-40s. Inge’s father. Strong and strict
German father, WWI vet, Iron Cross recipient. Disgusted and ashamed of what
has become of his country, desperate to keep his family together no matter
the cost.

REGINA AUERBACHER: Female, late 20s-40s. Inge’s mother. Gentle exterior,
stubborn and strong-willed interior. Willing to risk her life on multiple
occasions for her family’s safety.

*MISS MAHONEY: Female, 30+. New Yorker. Nurse in a TB ward. Cares deeply
for her patients, but patience can wear thin from time to time. Deeply
moved by Inge’s story.

*MRS. RINDER: Female, 30s-60s. Inge described her as “her angel in hell.”
Helps the Auerbacher family survive in Terezin as long as she can. Mother
to Tommy.

*MR. RUCHLIS: Male, 30+. NYC high school teacher. Supportive of his
students.

*OMA: Female, 50+. Inge’s grandmother. Nurturing, protective, brave.
