The Department of Dance at Case Western Reserve University continues its
performance series, Nouveaux Espaces, with Mather Dance Collective
(MaDaCol), which will present new digital dance works by second year
graduate students Mary-Elizabeth Fenn, Stephen Martey Markwei, and Tingyu
Xie in late November.

About the works:

Mary-Elizabeth Fenn collaborates with nine dancers to create a new digital
work set to music by Jin Yerei. Apart + Standing explores a movement
experience that allows the dancers’ kinetic response to be the guide. Fenn
investigates how people can access a way of moving that resonates within
their body and guides them to feel a part of something larger than
themselves, all while being alone and seen through the screen.

Cubicles, choreographed by Tingyu Xie, is a new dance video work that draws
inspiration from life during the quarantine, and explores the movements
that are limited due to a confined space. With music by Astor Piazzolla,
and a cast of 11 dancers, the work portrays a progression from indoor to
outdoor dancing, with the intention of sending positive energy even though
there are still many restrictions.

Stephen Martey Markwei expounds on the word Liberation, a work comprised of
8 dancers. Using music by Michael Wall, this work communicates an abstract
representation of optimism, where there is the tendency of wanting to break
away from negative situations, emotions and mindsets.

These works will be presented through the department’s YouTube channel (
