SHORT SYNOPSIS:

A romantic comedy about loss, love, change and redemption, The Clean House
is both whimsical and touching. A serious career-oriented doctor, Lane, has
hired a quirky Brazilian maid. The only problem is that the maid, Matilde,
hates to clean. Instead, she longs to be a comedian. Lane is deserted by
her husband, Charles, who leaves her for his mistress, Ana, a passionate,
older Brazilian woman upon whom he recently performed a mastectomy. Sarah
Ruhl’s enchanting play reminds us that there is humor and beauty to be
found in life’s most unlikely messes.

2003-2004 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize Winner, 2005 Pulitzer Prize in Drama
Finalist.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

NOTE: Everyone in this play should be able to tell a really good joke.

LANE (F, 40-60s, Ethnicity: OPEN - Casting: all ethnicities) A doctor. She
is devoted to order.

MATHILDE (F, 20s-early 30s, Ethnicity: written as Brazilian - Casting: all
ethnicities - Latin American actors encouraged to audition) Lane’s cleaning
lady. She has a refined sense of deadpan. She is devoted to creating the
perfect joke.  (Must be capable of performing/learning Brazilian-Portuguese
accent/dialogue )

VIRGINIA (F, 40s-60s, Ethnicity: OPEN - Casting: all ethnicities) Lane’s
sister. She is devoted to cleaning.

CHARLES (M, 40s-60s. Ethnicity: OPEN - Casting: all ethnicities) Lane’s
husband. A compassionate surgeon. He is childlike underneath his white
coat. In Act 1, Charles plays Mathilde’s father. (Movement experience is a
plus. Must be comfortable with kissing/intimate scenes.)

ANA (F, 50-60s, Ethnicity: written as Argentinian - Casting: all
ethnicities - Latin American actors encouraged to audition) She is
impossibly charismatic. In Act 1, she plays Mathilde’s mother. She is older
than Lane. (Must be capable of performing/learning Argentinian
accent/Spanish dialogue. Movement experience is a plus. Must be comfortable
with kissing/intimate scenes.)
