Katherine Calvey will be performing with the Parma Symphony Orchestra on
December 3, 2023 at 3:00 pm at Valley Forge High School. Tickets may be
purchased at www.parmaysymphony.org in advance or at the door. Adults $10
Students and seniors $5.00. Here is Katherine's Bio:
Katherine Calvey is delighted to return to her hometown- Cleveland, OH
after serving as the principal flutist of The Camerata de Coahuila where
she collaborated musically with prominent artists such as Rene Fleming and
Jose Carreras. In Latin America, Katherine served as the principal flutist
in The Barranquilla Symphony and later in The Sinfônica del Valle,
Colombia. She was principal flutist in The Acapulco Philharmonic followed
by The Chihuahua State Philharmonic. She was guest principal flutist in The
Monterrey Symphony Orchestra and played piccolo and flute in Mexico City’s
Minería Symphony. Ms. Calvey was also a guest principal flutist in China.
Ms. Calvey's orchestral career led to important venues such as Carnegie
Hall with The National Youth Guild Orchestra (due to the guidance of Dr.
Laycock) and to Europe with The American Wind Symphony. She also performed
in Battle Creek Symphony, MI; Cleveland Choral Arts Society Orchestra;
Comic Opera Guild of Ann Arbor, MI; Mansfield Symphony, OH; Ohio Light
Opera; Pueblo Symphony, CO; Rochester Symphony, MI; Traverse City Symphony,
MI; and Warren Symphony, MI. As a concerto soloist, Katherine has appeared
with the national symphonies of El Salvador, and of Peru, OSIJUT Orchestra,
Sonora State Symphony and Manizales Chamber Orchestra, She has performed
recitals in locations such as Curacao and Hawaii; chamber music concerts in
Italy, Mexico and Colombia; and in international music festivals in El
Paso, TX Mexico City, Monterrey and Quito, Ecuador, Ms. Calvey began her
studies with members of The Cleveland Orchestra while playing in The
Inaugural Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Dr.
Jahja Ling, and The Baldwin Wallace Preparatory Orchestra under the
direction of Rand Laycock. She received master classes with renowned
flutists such as Sir James Galway. At sixteen years old, Katherine won The
Inaugural Littmann Music Competition in New York. The following year she
won The Cleveland Rotary Club Music Competition proceeded by winning The
Agnes Fowler Wind Competition of The Ohio Federation of Music Clubs; The
Tuesday Music Club Competition; and The Mid Atlantic Flute Competition in
Washington D.C. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance
from The Peabody Institute of Music Johns Hopkins and Master of Music
degree from The University of Michigan , where she studied as a full
scholarship student of Leone Buyse. She has taught flute on four
continents. Nearly all of her former students hold professional music
positions. She was the flute professor and head of the wind instruments
department at The Conservatory of Music in Chihuahua and the head of the
flute department at The University of Cauca in Colombia. Ms. Calvey founded
and directed the CEMT Symphony Orchestra and was the guest conductor in
Saltillo Mexico. She thanks Dr. Laycock for his support in preparing for
the directing opportunities. Ms. Calvey has recorded three compact discs,
“Flute Fantasia”; “Silent Night”-with flute and guitar; and, “Canyon Echo”-
repertoire for solo flute recorded live inside Namurachi Canyon, Mexico.
Currently Ms. Calvey is freelancing and teaching music in the Greater
Cleveland area.
