Do you speak Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, and/or German, and want to share your love of the language with high school students?

Do you love film as an art form with the power to educate and enlighten as well as entertain?

Would you like to receive ticket vouchers for the Cleveland International Film Festival?

Are you available between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. on weekday mornngs?

If so, the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) wants YOU to join our FilmSlam volunteer team at Playhouse Square in April!  Read on for the details...

FilmSlam is the educational outreach program of CIFF, taking place on weekday mornings during the Festival - this year, that will be on April 4 and 5,  April 9 through 12.   Each morning, high school groups come to FilmSlam to see films that support and enhance their studies - these may be feature-length documentaries, narrative films that touch on a particular social or historical issue, or programs of short films around a particular theme.   The FilmSlam offerings include shorts programs for language students - so students learning Spanish, French, Mandarin, or German will come to FilmSlam to see a program of 3 - 5 short films in the language they are studying.   This is where our volunteer Foreign Language Greeters come into the picture.  As the school groups arrive, our Greeters talk individually with the students in the language they are studying to help create an immersive experience and encourage them to speak in the language.  After the screening, the Foreign Language Greeters assist with a Q&A/discussion session, encouraging the students to speak or helping them.

Each CIFF FilmSlam volunteer receives two CIFF ticket vouchers for each morning worked.  These vouchers can be traded in at the CIFF box office or website for tickets to any of the public screenings throughout CIFF (April 4 - 13).  Volunteers also get free parking at a nearby garage!  Plus the chance to help create a great experience for the next generation of language speakers and film fans - what's not to love?

The language shorts programs will screen on the following days, so we are looking for volunteers to join our team on each of these dates:

Thursday, April 4:               Spanish, French
Friday, April 5:                     Spanish, French

Tuesday, April 9:                 Spanish, Mandarin Chinese
Wednesday, April 10:       Spanish, German
Thursday, April 11:             Spanish, French
Friday, April 12:                  Spanish, French

The Foreign Language Greeters arrive at Playhouse Square between 8:30 - 8:45 each morning.  Film screenings begin at 9:45, and all screenings and Q&A sessions will wrap up by 11:30 each morning.  French and Spanish speakers need not commit to multiple days - if you want to join us every day that's terrific, but you're welcome to join the team for a day or two if that fits your schedule better.  Of course, the more mornings you work, the more vouchers you will receive...
