Reports To: Director, Community Arts School (CAS)
Background: The New Horizons Program was started at the Eastman School of Music in 1991 and now has more than 100 programs in the United States and Canada. BW’s New Horizons ensembles meet in the Boesel Musical Arts Center on the Baldwin Wallace campus and offer adults the opportunity to learn or hone their ability to play a string, woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments. Our New Horizons Band currently enriches the lives of 40 to 50 band members through this unique experience.
Job Summary: Under the direction of the Director of the Community Arts School and in collaboration with the CAS Music Department Coordinator and BW Conservatory Music Education Liaison, the NHB Director plans repertoire, manages Music Education interns, and leads musicians in weekly full ensemble rehearsals and sectionals in preparation for end-of-semester concert performances.
Essential duties, tasks, and responsibilities:
* Direct the New Horizons Band, conducting rehearsals, sectionals, and performances.
* Manage necessary functions such as repertoire selection, concert scheduling and management, and communication with band members and interns.
* Communicate effectively, collaboratively, and in a timely manner with the CAS Director, CAS staff, Conservatory Music Education Liaison, band members, and New Horizons colleagues, as necessary.
* Mentor Music Education interns, providing opportunities for leadership and constructive feedback.
* Lead recruitment efforts.
* Conduct hearing placements and/or auditions as appropriate.
Qualifications:
* Proven record as an outstanding educator and conductor.
* Expertise in leading and teaching non-professional musicians, with a deep understanding of the social and artistic needs of amateur music makers.
* Ability to communicate effectively with band members, colleagues, students, and staff.
* Enthusiasm for managing and guiding interns and aspiring music educators.
* Advanced degree and experience conducting and/or playing in a community band setting preferred.
* Additional areas of expertise or interest: senior adult education and administrative skills.
Pay: Per semester stipend of $1,875 paid in monthly installments.
