Baldwin Wallace University’s Conservatory of Performing Arts is seeking 2-3
Scenic Carpenters to work in our scenic studio for Fall 2025, with the
possibility of continuing on into Spring of 2026. The Scenic Carpenter is
responsible for the construction and fabrication of scenery under the
direction of the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director. The
Scenic Carpenter will read plans and execute scenery based on technical
drawings. This position will interact with BW undergraduate students, with
opportunity to lead them on projects or serving as a mentor.
*SCENIC CARPENTERS*
Group 1 Start/End Date: August 20th or 25th, 3-4 weeks, 20+ hours per week.
Group 2 Start/End Date: October 6th, 3-4 weeks, 20+ hours per week.
Compensation: $20/hour
Reports to: Technical Director
*Essential Duties and Responsibilities:*
- Construct scenic elements as directed by the Technical Director and
Assistant Technical Director.
- Read and execute technical design drawings.
- Safe operation and use of standard power tools: table saw, circular
saw, impact drivers and drills, panel saw, jigsaw, routers, sanders,
pneumatics, and hand tools.
- Assist in rigging scenery
- Assist in assembling scenery in position on stage
- Maintain a clean and safe workplace
- Follow Health and Safety protocols
*Qualifications:*
- 5+ years of professional carpentry experience
- Experience building scenery and furniture
- Experience rigging
- Able to read construction drawings
- Able to work with students safely, effectively, and positively
- Able to routinely lift and move 50 lbs
- Able to climb ladders and scaffolding to work at heights when necessary
- Self-motivated, effective problem-solving abilities, and time
management skills
*Ideal Qualifications:*
- Experience with welding
- Eager to educate and mentor undergraduate students
- Knowledge of Vectorworks
*Employment Dates and Times:*
The build for our first production*, Is He Dead?*, will begin on August
20th or 25th, 2025, depending on availability. The scenic carpenter will
work at least 20 hours per week.
The build for our second production, *9 to 5 The Musical,* will begin on or
around October 6th, depending on availability. The scenic carpenter will
work at least 20 hours per week.
The scene shop is open from 1-5pm each week day. Occasionally the shop may
be open in the mornings, depending on production needs and space
availability.
This position has the potential to continue on into the Spring semester and
renew for subsequent production seasons.
