ALBERT LU (Head of the New World Order, age ambiguous—could be 50s-70s)
Physical Description: "Small in stature, immense in power." This deliberate contrast is key to Lu's characterization. Physically unimposing—perhaps slight build, average or below-average height, nondescript features that allow him to disappear in a crowd if needed. But his presence fills the room through sheer force of will and authority. Cold, calculating eyes that miss nothing. Moves with economy and precision. Impeccably dressed in a way that signals power without ostentation—tailored but severe.
JIM (Father, late 30s-early 40s)
Physical Description: Gaunt, hollow-cheeked, with trembling hands that betray his inner turmoil. Worn clothing, weathered skin from outdoor living. Eyes that once held hope now show desperation and shame.
Character Arc: Jim represents the compromiser—a man who has rationalized betrayal as pragmatism. Once possibly a provider and protector, the collapse has broken something fundamental in him. He's convinced himself that survival justifies any cost, unable or unwilling to see beyond immediate physical needs. His trembling hands when questioned about the meat reveal he knows he's crossing moral lines, but he's already committed to the path of least resistance.
JOANNE (Mother, late 30s-early 40s)
Physical Description: Gaunt but spiritually fierce. Despite deprivation, there's a strength in her eyes—maternal protection fused with unwavering conviction. Worn hands that have learned to make do with nothing.
Character Arc: Joanne is the spiritual anchor and warrior of the family. Where Jim has collapsed morally, she has been fortified. She maintains daily Scripture reading even in the camp, grounding her children in eternal truth rather than temporal comfort. She immediately recognizes the spiritual stakes when the authorities arrive—this isn't about law enforcement; it's about souls.
EDMOND (Son, 10 years old)
Physical Description: Thin, with the premature weariness of a child who's grown up too fast. Old enough to understand hunger, young enough to still ask questions. Eyes that dart between his parents, trying to read the situation.
Character Arc: Edmond represents innocence being forced into a choice no child should make. At 10, he's old enough to remember "before" but young enough that the promises of pizza and ice cream still hold powerful sway. He eats without hesitation, suggesting either trust in his father or pragmatic hunger.
MARY ELLEN (Daughter, 7 years old)
Physical Description: Small, fragile, with wide questioning eyes. Clutches a one-eared rabbit—a symbol of childhood innocence clinging to survival. More hesitant than her brother, she still looks to her mother for guidance and reassurance.
Character Arc: Mary Ellen represents pure innocence facing corruption. She's the youngest, most vulnerable, and most emotionally attuned to the spiritual danger. Her questions ("Is God mad at us?") show she senses something is deeply wrong even if she can't articulate it.
