The first winner of The Mandel Jewish Community Center’s Dorothy Silver Playwriting Competition — <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B><I>A Shayna Maidel</I></B></FONT> by Barbara Lebow — returns in a production directed by Fred Sternfeld and presented in association with Tri-C Eastern Campus Theatre Arts.<BR>

Literally translated as “a pretty girl,” <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B><I>A Shayna Maidel</I></B></FONT> conveys the aftermath of the Holocaust through a poignant, imaginatively conceived examination of one divided family's experience. Two sisters separated in childhood—one raised in America, the other in Poland—are reunited in New York City in 1946 in the wake of World War II and the Holocaust. After a 15-year separation and the loss of most family members, they are nearly strangers and struggle to reconnect. <BR>

Subtitled “The Life of a Family,” <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B><I>A Shayna Maidel</I></B></FONT> was widely produced by America's leading regional theatres and went on to become a long-running Off-Broadway success. It was also adapted into a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, Miss Rose White. Critics have lauded it as a “testamentary classic…wrenching and uplifting.” <I>The Los Angeles Times </I>described <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B><I>A Shayna Maidel</I></B></FONT> as “finely crafted and emotionally hypercharged…it offers the kind of rich and poignant characters that are a gift to actor and audience alike.” <BR>
