font-family:Arial'>In <i><span style='font-style:italic'>A Howl in the Woods</span></i>,
Tom Hayes tells the story of three men out in the woods. Timothy, an
obsequious young cowboy, is at a camp with Spooky, a hypermasculine and
domineering cowboy. What they are doing in the woods isn't really stated,
but they pass their time in the campsite in various ways: including
cross-dressing, drinking, reciting obscure poetic lines and making
muffins. During this time, Timothy begins to question his role and
relationship with Spooky. The time that Spooky and Timothy have together is cut
short when a Ranger arrives. The Ranger is a man of law and rules and is
appalled by the behavior of both Timothy and Spooky and seeks to put an end to
it. An inevitable clash ensues; but the battle lines aren’t nearly
as clean as one might expect: loyalties are as suspect as are the
personalities, roles, and genders the campers inhabit. Conflicts,
alliances, and loyalties grow and shift between all three men; and what’s
with that howling in the woods? In the end, Hayes’s play draws our
attention to questions that are difficult to answer, such as how do we define
ourselves? What do we owe other people? What do we owe ourselves? Why do
people feel compelled to control or influence others? And why is it difficult to
stand up for what we believe in, and why do others line up against you?<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

Mechanic. Wrongfully convicted of throwing a cherry bomb during a campus
antiwar demonstration on May 4, 1970, he went underground rather than face a
five-year prison sentence. He transformed himself into <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">Phoenix</st1:place></st1:City> businessman and civic leader Gary
Tredway, a man he might have remained had he not decided in late 1999 to run
for public office. By February 2000, he is once again Howard Mechanic, but he
wears a prison uniform that could be his wardrobe for the foreseeable future.
