Paul Shapiro returns to play and jive in the 2007-08 Mandel JCC Arts & Culture Program with his "Ribs & Brisket Revue" on February 9, 2008 at 8 pm in The Mandel JCC Stonehill Auditorium. Back by popular demand following his sold-out Midnight Minyan concert early in 2006, Shapiro's Ribs & Brisket Revue serves up heaping helpings of 1940s style Jewish Jazz, Yiddish Swing, and various kosher-style blues. <BR>

</B>Shmaltz Brewing Company (www.shmaltz.com <<FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><U>http://www.shmaltz.com/</U></FONT>> ) will be on hand for a tasting of their HE'BREW Gourmet Kosher Beer (Jewbelation Eleven, Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A., Genesis Ale, Messiah Bold, ORIGIN Pomegranate Ale) prior to the concert from 6:30-7:30pm at Stonehill Auditorium. <B>WHAT MAKES MUSIC SOUND JEWISH WORKSHOP<BR>
</B>As part of the MJCC's Educational Surround series, Shapiro will also lead a free workshop on Friday, February 8, 2008 from 4 to 5 pm that explores the musical elements that create Jewish sonorities. What Makes Music Sound Jewish? is open to non-instrumentalists as well. This JCC Educational Surround Event is free and open to the public and will take place at the Hillel Center at Case Western Reserve University (11291 Euclid Avenue).<BR>

<B>ABOUT PAUL SHAPIRO<BR>
</B>New York-based saxophonist/flautist/composer Paul Shapiro (www.PaulShapiroMusic.com <<FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><U>http://www.paulshapiromusic.com/</U></FONT>> ) has been active in New York's creative music scene for over two decades. He is best known for his recording and performance work with an astonishingly diverse array of musicians and producers: Queen Latifah, Ofra Haza, Marc Anthony, Frankie Knuckles, Ben Folds Five, Janet Jackson, Naughty by Nature, Lou Reed, Khaled, Brian McKnight, Majek Fashek, Towa Tei, Marshall Crenshaw, N'Dea Davenport, Mariah Carey, Satoshi Tomile, and Yoko Kanno's Cowboy Bebop. <BR>

Shapiro's debut recording as a leader is the instrumental "Midnight Minyan," which was released on John Zorn's Tzadik Records label in 2003 and presented R&B and swing arrangements of traditional liturgical music. Following up on the enormous success of "Midnight Minyan," Shapiro turned his prodigious arranging talents and fat tenor sound to eight of his own compositions and two liturgical melodies in "It's in the Twilight," also on Tzadik Records. <BR>

<B>PAUL SHAPIRO'S "RIBS & BRISKET REVUE"<BR>
</B>Paul Shapiro's "Ribs & Brisket Revue" was launched in late 2003 and has been playing at Cornelia Street Café in New York and other venues since. The group, with both Jewish and African-American musicians, emerged from Shapiro's interest in Jewish music and its contribution to jazz in the early decades of the 20th century.<BR>
<BR>
Cast mostly in the form of swing and jump, the bouncy, jazzy R&B variant popularized by saxophonist Louis Jordan & His Tympani Five in the 1940s, the Revue features <B>Shapiro</B> on saxophone, <B>Brian Mitchell</B> on piano, <B>Tony Lewis </B>on drums, <B>Booker King</B> on bass and vocalists <B>Babi Floyd</B> and <B>Priscilla Owens</B>.<BR>
