Proceeds from the concert will help to defray the cost of participating in
and training for world and other championship competitions. Among the
dancers participating in the April 6 concert are ten Burke dancers who are
just returning from competing in the World Championship competition held in
Belfast, Northern Ireland, from March 23-30. The dancers qualified as top
competitors in their respective age groups, either at the 2007 Midwest Regional
Oireachtas, a competition held in Chicago that drew dancers from 13 states, or
the 2007 North American National Championships, which was held this past July in
Ottawa, Canada, and involved competitors from all over the United States and
Canada.

The Burke School, which was founded by Theresa Burke in 1958, has a long
tradition of excellence, with many champions at the regional, national and world
levels. In addition, the Burke School has always had a strong commitment
to the community of Cleveland and the surrounding suburbs. Burke dancers
frequently perform at charitable events, schools, nursing homes and
international festivals. The Burke School operates in Cleveland,
Youngstown, and Pittsburgh. In 1965, Theresa Burke became the first North
American woman, and the second North American overall, to receive her
certification for teaching and adjudicating traditional Irish step
dancing. A 2005 inductee into the North American Irish Dance Teacher Hall
of Fame, she has taught numerous regional, national, and world qualifiers and
champions.

Planning your summer road trip?
