was born 7 years before and a few miles south of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s
birth date & place. Set in turn-of-the-century <st1:State w:st="on">Wisconsin</st1:State>,
the warm and honest portraits of life in the rural <st1:place w:st="on">Midwest</st1:place>
are lively, touching, heartfelt, and timeless.  <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

born in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">West Salem</st1:City>, <st1:State
 w:st="on">Wisconsin</st1:State></st1:place>, in 1860. After moving with his
family to a succession of homesteads in <st1:State w:st="on">Iowa</st1:State>
and <st1:State w:st="on">South Dakota</st1:State>, he went to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City
 w:st="on">Boston</st1:City></st1:place> in 1884, determined to embark on a
literary career. His first success was <i><span style='font-style:italic'>Main-Travelled
Roads</span></i>, a collection of short stories published in 1891. He moved to <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> in 1893, lectured
widely on literary topics, and agitated for a realistic American literature
through a number of essays, some of which were revised into his 1894 manifesto,
<i><span style='font-style:italic'>Crumbling Idols</span></i>.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

performance, there will be an opportunity for the audience to discuss the play
