was born 7 years before and a few miles south of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s
birth date & place. Set in turn-of-the-century <st1:State w:st="on">Wisconsin</st1:State>,
the warm and honest portraits of life in the rural <st1:place w:st="on">Midwest</st1:place>
are lively, touching, heartfelt, and timeless. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial'>Hamlin Garland was
born in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">West Salem</st1:City>, <st1:State
w:st="on">Wisconsin</st1:State></st1:place>, in 1860. After moving with his
family to a succession of homesteads in <st1:State w:st="on">Iowa</st1:State>
and <st1:State w:st="on">South Dakota</st1:State>, he went to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City
w:st="on">Boston</st1:City></st1:place> in 1884, determined to embark on a
literary career. His first success was <i><span style='font-style:italic'>Main-Travelled
Roads</span></i>, a collection of short stories published in 1891. He moved to <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Chicago</st1:City></st1:place> in 1893, lectured
widely on literary topics, and agitated for a realistic American literature
through a number of essays, some of which were revised into his 1894 manifesto,

color:black'>Dave Hudson and Paul Libman began working together in 2002, after
Paul left a successful advertising jingle career for the much more lucrative

later, they landed their first professional contract with American Folklore
Theatre, where their initial collaboration, Muskie Love, played for two

style='font-style:italic'>Dust and Dreams: Celebrating Sandburg</span></i>

won the 2005 Richard Rodgers Development Award for New Musicals, and was also
presented at <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Chicago</st1:place></st1:City>'s

style='font-style:italic'>Main-Travelled Roads</span></i>, was selected for the
2006 Stages Festival, was featured twice in the Madison Rep's Festival of New
Plays, and was the winner of the 2007 Richard Rodgers Award. Produced at AFT in
the fall of 2007, Main-Travelled Roads was presented at the New York Barrow
Street Theatre in March 2008. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
