composers—Stravinsky, Copland, Shostakovich—undertook their final
works, John Lennon used his Montreal bed-in to demand world peace, Jimi Hendrix
destroyed a violin on the stage of Queen Elizabeth Hall, Steve Reich and Philip
Glass seemed to reboot Western music at the Whitney Museum, Cornelius Cardew invited
anyone to make music with his Scratch Orchestra, and Leonard Bernstein’s <i><span
style='font-style:italic'>Mass</span></i> seemed to bring the threat of violent
revolution directly to God.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
